Selecting colours
- First, check out the colour charts
- Decide if your job requires dyes or paints. Here's a helpful guide or check out FAQs
- Select the samples you would like to order
- Choose the corresponding pack size
How to test
- Find an inconspicuous area to make your test (for example, at the back, between cushions, on the inside at the zipper etc).
- Apply a spot of colour or Topcoat and allow drying or force dry with a hairdryer. Apply a second spot and dry it off. If needed, apply another coat or two until you get a good reading on the colour.
- Once dry, assess. Examine it in different lights and the following day.
Tip: Best results are achieved when the shine of your colour matches the shine of your topcoat. When choosing your topcoat, think about whether you want a low sheen or high shine result. Check out FAQs for more info on colour and topcoat selection.
Sample Pots are a great way to get a good understanding of your colour options, explore new colours and can save you from making product selection mistakes.

Colour testing
1) Find an inconspicuous place on your job to test the colours. This can be in a hidden area such as between cushions, down very low at the back, underneath, or on the inside (eg: handbags or zippered cushions). Another option is a leather swatch from the furniture retailer or leather merchant or a piece of white vinyl.
2) Clean the area. This can be done with a leather cleaner such as Cleanse (No.1) or Spot & Prep (No.4). If you don't have any cleaner on hand, use water and a scrubbing brush.
3) Apply a test spot of each colour. A 50 cent piece sized spot is usually large enough to get a good reading on the colour. Be sure to identify which colour each test spot corresponds to. This can be done by labelling a post-it note for each colour that is placed near the test spot or by placing the bottles near the test spots then taking a photo on your phone.
4) Allow drying or force dry using a hair dryer. Apply another 2-4 coats allowing drying between each one.
5) Assess the colours. As mositure is expelled, the colours may darken ever so slightly. You can choose to remove the tests immediately or reassess the following day.
Typically, test spots can be removed with Spot & Prep (No.4) within the first hour. Thereafter, they may be permanent. Colouring over the test spots conceals them fully.
Blending colours
1) In a clean vessel such as an empty bottle, plastic cup, or on an old, preferably white saucer (when blending tiny amounts of colour), mix 2 or more colours in the proportion you think is needed for your job. This can be as simple as a 50:50 ratio if you creating your own unique colour or it can be a process of discovery with many tests before you arrive at the right blend. Try to keep tack of each incremental change you make to your colour. Eg; plus 6 drops of White or plus 1ml of Scarlet
2) When you have mixed the correct colour, proceed with your job or record the approximate ratios for each colour.
3) Now that you have your colour formula, mix or order the amount of colour needed for your job.

Not being able to get a decent size ink bloom out of my leather bag other than spending $300-$500 to professionally correct these samples were my last resort. Selecting colours to make an almost perfect match, I've saved my bag and its now wearable again! Very happy and relieved!
I chose 3 samples from your colour selector, and one was about a 99% match. Brushed on 5 or 6 coats, and now I have to look hard to find the repair area. Plus, a DIY leather repair on my $2000 sofa, for under $30!
Couldnt be happier with the sample pots I purchased! Very fortunate that the beige was a perfect match to repair my leather sleeved letterman jacket! Thanks for saving me $350 which is what I was quoted for the repair!
Having the colours in front of me made all the difference. I was certain I’d found the right shade online and almost ordered a full 250ml – thankfully I didn’t! Once I tested the samples on the little leather swatch provided, it was obvious the colour I thought matched was way off. One of the others in the kit turned out to be the perfect match. If you’re unsure, grab the 5-pot option. It gives you a much better spread of tones to compare and makes finding the right match stress-free. Definitely worth it.
I bought some sample pots to try to cover up the bald spots on my favourite old shoes. Painted on pony hair leather. Leather paints were easy to blend and clean up afterwards. Not the best paint job by me (hard to replicate a furry look on bald leather!), but good enough. very happy, thanks.
In planning to dye a brand new pair of leather dancing shoes from Black to White, the sample pots provided a means of testing on an old pair of shoes to see which shade was preferred, an indication of how many coats might be required and opportunities to experiment with different application methods. It came with a white leather sample as well which is helpful. Delivery was fast.
I needed to find a match for a small section that has worn on my lounge, I picked the 3 closest colours from the available options but found that they were not a perfect match but with a bit of mixing the different colours vials and then even using a 2:1 ration of the different colours, I found the perfect match
Amazing results. Lounge looks like new again
Great way to get the colour right as the screen based colours are darker than the samples. Just enough samples to get a colour match. Would be good if the cost of the samples was rebated off the product we buy
I ordered 3 sample pots which arrived within the expected time. Fortunately the sample colour matched couches and I have since ordered the full kit. Can't wait to start my DYI project.
The 3 sample pots were great to help match the colours I needed for my lounge. The white was a perfect match when dry. They’re a great idea because there are a huge array of difference shades in each colour.
The original colour in the repair kit was not quite right so I ordered sample pots which let me blend to the right colour. Overall easy to do and very happy with the result.
Your products are great and your service is 6 star. What an awesome business
Leather hero helper me choose the right product with their expert advice and finished my project at ease.
I haven't completely finished at this time but so far looks good.
Easy to use and mix colours to get close to the shade you need. Not perfect but close.
My daughter has just used your products on her white leather lounge. She is extremely happy with the results
Excellent result
So close to original colour it’s amazing
a great way to confirm the colour that I needed to order
Great product and colour match. Easy to use.
We bought a kit and it went very well.
